nostalgia

Sitting in a crowded cinema, waiting for Hellboy II (more on that later) to show, I saw the preview to Mamma Mia and realised I'd love to have been able to see it with my Mum. Some of my earliest memories are of my Mum having the radio on, with ABBA playing, as she puttered around the house, waiting for my Dad to get back from uni.

Seeing this at a popular web site and wishing I'd seen it a few days earlier so I could have put my name in the hat. My aunt (who is a voracious reader--not just romances but everything) first gave me Devil's Cub to read when I was a tween. I can still recall how it ends, though I've not revisited it since I entered my teens. I recall liking how the heroine gets things done without waiting to whinge about stuff. During my undergrad years in far off Northern Queensland and when I had my first long-term job and was living (alone) in Thailand, I had Black Sheep and Venetia with me, both of which were excellent beach (and comfort) reads and reminded me of home.

The Road

I, like many others, was one of the people who didn't believe Viggo would make a good Aragorn. I preferred Sean Bean, just because I'd seen his work before and, hey, Sean Bean! and yet was a Viggo-fan by the end of LOTR.

What extent of a fan, yous ask? Well, I've watched Hidalgo more than once.

So, I'm rather excited about The Road (pic above). I liked the book though I'm curious as to how things will change in the film.

news you all should know

Finished grading. Went to catch up with news and found the BBC's "most read" story was this:

"Great tits cope well with warming"

Indeed.

Now for a non-Colin Firth's penis post.

Am in love with Engineer #1. Damn my cat allergies.

in which i'm disappointed at my lack of "true darkness"

Your Score: Catwoman

You scored 26% True Darkness

Catwoman, aka Selina Kyle, first appeared as an adversary of Batman, later they became lovers and later adversaries and lovers again... She is a whip-carrying burglar with a taste for high stake thefts. She is more an anti-hero than a supervillainess.
How Selina came to be Catwoman: When she was thirteen, Selina discovered that the Hall's administrator was embezzling funds and confronted her. In an attempt to cover up the illegal activities, the administrator put Selina in a bag and dropped her in a river to drown (like a cat). Selina was able to escape and return to the orphanage where she stole documents exposing the administrator's corruption and sent them to the authorities. She also took the opportunity to steal enough money to live on before going back to the streets.

if you had no restaints you would be sneakier. There are some things you would like to do, but you feel you shouldn't. But even if you always did what you wanted to, you would still be okay, and a good person. Maybe do something really crazy sometimes and you'd be quite happy.

Categories you could get:

Phoney Bone 0-11%, the Hulk 12-22%, Catwoman 23-33%, Spawn 34-44%, the Darkness 45-55%, Magneto 56-66%, Darth Vader67-77%, Morgan Le Fey 78-88%, Sephiroth 89-100%.

in which i get called "baby"

Worked most of today, designing syllabi for the two classes I'm teaching over the summer and grading papers. Then, went and joined some mates for a few drinks. On my way back home, it started raining so took the bus. This ensued:

(at my stop) me: Thanks very much, have a good night.
bus driver (a bloke): good night baby.
me (in my head): baby???

I'm not sure why "baby" makes me feel uncomfortable while I'm fine with being called "love" in places like Australia and Wales. It's probably some odd cultural hang-up. Also, probably some sort of residue of having watched Dirty Dancing as a young 'un.

Talking about remnants from the past, did yous read that NKOTB are reforming?

Because I need this.

This has been an exhausting week. I'm going to chalk it up to coming down with a cold and leave it there.

My head is in a sappy kind of place. Where I want to have meaningful conversations with those I love and re-affirm relationships that matter and make sure people know how much they mean to me.

Obviously I am making myself vomit. A lot.

Not to mention this will probably make Bum squirm and refuse to speak to me until I get my head out of ass (arse?). Which will be soon.

The saving grace is that while I am in this ever so drippy frame of mind, I also have a drippy nose and scratchy voice and am blowing my nose every Goddamn minute. Therefore, I am not speaking to anyone very much right now. And so loved ones have been spared the "You know how much you mean to me, don't you? Why the beautiful components that comprise you fill me with joy and light and make me a better person in all ways? I want to shower you in rainbows and have unicorns follow you around, while chipmunks sing to you. In Italian."

Apparently I am also a little bit drunky-drunk when I'm sick and exhausted.

Perhaps it's the pseudeoephedrine.

Whatever it is, this makes me happy in my heart.

Happy weekend.

Languid-handed vampires ahoy!

Went over to Border's to pick up the book Fanny talked about earlier. Ended up buying this and this instead.

Just finished reading the first one (see pic). Plenty of vampires and a rather unbelievable tale of how two people who love each other keep their hands off each other for over 600 years. I don't want much in my vampire books but, really? That's taking abstinence much too far.

ETA: Since I was half-asleep when I wrote this, I forgot to add this book comes very close to violating one of my taboos in life. Most things, I'm fine with--I figure if some of us fancy diaper-wearing and weeing on each other while performing tantric sex, then good on them. But, Evermore has one of the few things that make me icked out. Or could have, if the author hadn't magicked it away towards the end.
I want Fanny to read this to see what she reckons.
